The 21st edition of the Maccabiah Games has officially opened! Also known as the ‘Jewish Olympics’, the quadrennial games officially begin today with 10,000 individuals competing across 42 sports – the largest sporting event of 2022. At the opening ceremony, United States President Joe Biden will address the crowd, as thousands flock to the Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem. Although Team SA has one of the smaller delegations, it will most definitely (as usual) punch above its weight, with a Silver already in the bag for the SA Rugby 7s team, concluding yesterday’s two-day event.
The Cape SAJBD wishes our affiliate, Maccabi SA and all our participant’s good luck and behatzlacha for the Games, some of whom include its very own Board members’ families. In the spirit of the competition, may participants foster connections with their fellow Jews from around the world and come back not only with medals but with a newfound Jewish identity.
