The Cape South African Jewish Board of Deputies condemns the unrest that has broken out in KZN and Gauteng. South Africa’s people will only be safe when we accept the rule of law and respect the judiciary.
When this respect breaks down, criminals can run amok and seize the opportunity to loot and burn. Criminals are only concerned with the liquor or cell phones they are able to steal, they are not concerned about the jobs lost and the damage that the devastation is doing to our economy, and our people already struggling from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In particular we condemn the xenophobic attacks on foreigners in Gauteng and the looting of their shops, and the Mayville Mosque set on fire in an Islamophobic attack. Houses of worship should be sacrosanct.
